I wasn’t sure what to expect when I signed up to the Global Game Jam, but it was better than anything I would have expected. Really an amazing experience.
– For the first time, I got to work with artists – my team had two 2-D artists and one music / sound guy. While I try to be careful with using stereotypes, I can’t deny that of all the programmers, managers, and artists I’ve met, there is definitely a difference in the average mindsets. And it was really great to meet and work with people from different backgrounds. Also, seeing artists work is really fun.
– Game development seems to draw a really nice, friendly crowd of people. But I guess that any event based on doing a lot of work for free just for the fun of creating something and meeting other people, would draw friendly people.
– I fully expected to find myself in a Unity3D project, but apparently – good old general purpose programming languages can still work, even in such limited time. While we were very close to not having anything finished on time, eventually we had a pretty nice (even if buggy and incomplete) result to show. And that’s when we had what I think was a relatively ambitious project.
So anyway, that was a lot of fun. And in case you’re wondering, here is our game – the adventures of a hero advancing through hordes of demons, armed with his gods-given special power – the ability to reincarnate at any time and cooperate with himself in completing the level:
Update (2.2.20012): I shouldn’t forget to give some credit to my main inspiration for this game – Chronotron by Scarybug, which does a very similar thing in a puzzle / platform game. Actually, my original idea was inspired by it but very different, but after some discussions amongst our team we changed the concept to be even more similar to Chronotron. But still, I think there is a lot of difference between the two.
